Why is GameMaker now available for free?

Earlier this year, GameMaker was acquired by Opera, a browser developer and consumer internet brand, with GameMaker forming the cornerstone of Opera’s new Opera Gaming division - alongside Opera GX - the world’s first browser built specifically for gamers.

Stuart Poole, GM at GameMaker, said: “Our vision has always been to try and make it as easy as possible for anyone to make their own awesome games and today’s announcement represents a major milestone in the realisation of that vision.

“By making GameMaker free for everyone, we’re removing a major barrier so that anyone can try game making for the first time and start to unleash their inner creativity without any time limits.”

Krystian Kolondra, EVP PC & Gaming at Opera, added: “By making GameMaker free for everyone, we believe that creating games will soon become a popular part of everyday life for many people.”

If you’re new to GameMaker, we have dozens of handy articles, tutorials, and webinars available to help you master the world of GameMaker Language.

Happy GameMaking!
